In responding to an allegation that John McCain had plagiarized a war story from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the McCain Campaign posted the following on the campaign blog:
It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman’s memory of war from the comfort of mom’s basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others.
McCain may disagree with the allegations of plagiarizm, but that does not mean that he needs to take a swipe at gamers
The best response I saw was at Threat Level, which mused:
Ouch. I’d take offense, but I have a saving-throw to make, and the dim light in this basement is making it hard to see the D20.
Naturally, gamers are not amused by the McCain campaign’s quick resort to ’80s-era cultural stereotypes — once McCain masters the internet, we’re confident he’ll contemporize and start bashing video gamers instead.
Threat Level then posits the interesting question of what kind of monster McCain would be. The author’s answer?
Our money is on some sort of shape-shifting offshore drill monster.
Check out the threat level page though, and cast your vote or propose your own monster type.

The real irony is that many of the gamers I know, myself included, are registered Republicans. Most of the folks I knew that were liberals back in the D&D heyday were too stoned or busy working on their macrame science projects to settle down and play a game that involved conquest and empire building. I guess that goes to show you how out of touch the aging Republican party is – they can’t even identify their own demographic. Won’t matter much, most of us are ready for a change anyway.
