When we originally got word that the plan was to reboot the Star Trek franchise, I was worried about how this latest movie would turn out. I needn’t have wasted time worrying.
The movie rocks. I absolutely loved it (despite the fact that it had time travel in it). In fact, I liked how they did time travel in this installment for two reasons. First, a time travel occurred, but the people who traveled did not have a little gizmo that allowed them to do it at will. Second, the time travel changed the timeline. If I am going to have time travel, I will take it this way.
I will also say that I thought the film was very well cast. The new actors gave the proper homage to the original stars. However, they also brought themselves to the movie and made the characters their own.
If you haven’t seen it yet, go see it, on IMAX if you can.

I agree that the movie was very thrilling and well done, however, it did bug me with a few impossibilities. The biggy was dropping the warp core in order create a wave that would jettison them to safety. Pleeeease, as soon as they would drop out of warp to jettison the warp core, they would be sucked in to the black hole. Even if they did manage not to be sucked in, they would be blow to pieces be the warp core explosion rather than being propelled in to space.
Also, since when has Chekov has brown curly hair?
Was Scotty materializing in a tube of water really necessary? It would have better if it was a vat of scotch.
There is no way that bones would have been in Starfleet at the same time as Kirk and the others. He is way older and so is Spock. Did Spock have a mid-life crisis and decide to join Starfleet?
Why can’t they make a Star Trek movie that is a little more believable? I know that this world could never exist, but could we not break so many rules of physics and storyline inconsistencies?
Other than that–awesome film. Can’t wait to see it again

The best comment I saw about the science (or lack thereof) in the movie came from John Scalzi (http://tinyurl.com/r9dvgx):
“What I didn’t like: Good lord, was the science in this one bad. Dear Kurtzman and Orci: The next time you play with black holes, won’t you please talk to an actual scientist? Also: “Red Matter”? Seriously? Mind you, I don’t expect much out of Star Trek, science-wise, because, well. Let’s just say the track record’s just not there. Even so, at a certain point the science in one’s science fiction should at least wave in the general direction of plausibility. It’s not too much to ask for.”
I agree that the science in this was absolutely awful. However it was a fun movie.
On a different point, Spock was clearly an instructor at the academy, not a student.
