When we originally got word that the plan was to reboot the Star Trek franchise, I was worried about how this latest movie would turn out. I needn’t have wasted time worrying.

The movie rocks. I absolutely loved it (despite the fact that it had time travel in it). In fact, I liked how they did time travel in this installment for two reasons. First, a time travel occurred, but the people who traveled did not have a little gizmo that allowed them to do it at will. Second, the time travel changed the timeline. If I am going to have time travel, I will take it this way.

I will also say that I thought the film was very well cast. The new actors gave the proper homage to the original stars. However, they also brought themselves to the movie and made the characters their own.

If you haven’t seen it yet, go see it, on IMAX if you can.

I did go into the theater eyes wide open. Realizing that this was more of a kid’s attraction I expected a large portion of the audience to be kids. To my surprise, no a single kid issue form anyone. There was however parent that spent most of the movie texting. I was in a perfect position to see the bright blue white glow of the iPhone. So I decided I’d rather have 1 idiot parent than several hundred rude kids.

We see the return of Sarah Strange as Morgan Le Fey (AKA Ganos Lal). We also have the return of a previously thought eliminated threat as well as a major opponent that is virtually unstoppable.

I plan on buying the DVD as soon as I change my employment situation. There are some bonus scenes that I want to see.

I said before that I thought the story in Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was crap. However, I still enjoyed the movie.

I have found two great posts that point out just a few of the problems with the story. First is the abridged script.

The abridged script from the begining of the movie:

HARRISON FORD

Alright folks, let’s get this show on the road. I want to make it to Country Buffet by four.

CATE BLANCHETT

Pryvet, Harrison. I am evil Soviet. You vill help me find Moose and Squirrel, yes?

HARRISON FORD

Holy Christ, you’re not going to talk like that the whole movie are you?

CATE BLANCHETT

Da. You vill help locate MacKuffin now.

HARRISON FORD

Fine. The thing you’re looking for is super magnetic, so if we just throw this gunpowder into the air it will lead us to the MacGuffin.

RAY WINSTONE

Nineteen years to write this movie and that’s how it’s going to start? Really? I think I’m going to write myself out of this movie as much as possible by revealing myself to be a double agent.

The second post is 50 Flaws of Indy IV. A couple of my favorites

14) What was the point of the scorpion sting on Mutt’s hand? Shouldn’t that have led to something else? Or a setup to a joke of some kind later? By the way, David, scorpions STING, they don’t BITE. I seriously doubt Indy would’ve made that little verbal mistake.

16) The second problem is that the discovery of the skull was too simple and too easy. He handed a corpse to Mutt and flipped up some fabric. Are you kidding me? Consider the past films and all the great care that went into the revealing of the all-important McGuffin, which was always made as special as possible for the audience.

20) The skull looked like cheap plastic filled with Saran Wrap. There was no discernible rhyme or reason to its properties except that they were carefully designed to save Indy whenever he was in trouble.

I am just glad to see that someone else agrees that the skull looks like something someone picked up at a Everything for $1 store. They spent $400 million dollars to make this movie and the main prop for the movie looked like something made by a bunch of kindergarten kids. WTF? I still don’t get that.

On Friday I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with the family. I thought that the background story line about the crystal skull, etc. was crap. Essentially George Lucas circa Star Wars Episode 1, crap. In reality, however, that doesn’t really matter. The background story is nothing but the MacGuffin anyway.

The real question is, Was it an Indiana Jones movie? My answer is Absolutely!

It had snakes, killer ants, a great boat ride, and a fantastic chase through the jungle. I don’t care that the chase through the jungle doesn’t make sense, I don’t care that they were driving down a deforested path that had not yet been deforested. It was a great chase. The truck chase in Raiders had it’s flaws too. However, I thought this chase through the jungle was a great homage to it.

The best way to think of this movie is as Raiders of the Lost Ark with an old Indy. I liked it that they did not ignore the fact that Indy is now old. The movie acknowledged and used it. I was also surprised that I enjoyed Shia LaBeouf in his role. He played an excellent greaser and I thought he did a good job as the young version of Indy. It was also nice to see Karen Allen back as Marion Ravenwood.

In sum, ignore the story line, and watch the movie. It is much more like Raiders than either of the other two sequels. I had a blast watching it. Two thumbs up from me!

If you like Zombie movies, Fido may be the movie for you. IMDB provides the following plot summary:

But when FIDO eats the next-door neighbor, Mom and Dad hit the roof, and Timmy has to go to the ends of the earth to keep Fido a part of the family.
